People recycle. As a visual journalist, I tell people's stories through drawings and illustrated text. In conjunction with the Educational Learning Center at Recology, the people that work for this organization, this diverse group of mechanics, drivers, collectors, managers, administrators, engineers and Recologists will tell the story of recycling. They know the process, the technology and what recycling means to the community and to the world. The challenge for me is to provide effective and beautiful reportage that informs. This narrative originates with them. It's delivered in traditional and interactive forms: a book, broadsheet, a video and a blog. Found materials provide a subtext that supports the storytelling.
While employed as a staff artist at the San Francisco Chronicle, I created several visual essays including the weekly column, the Bay Folk Sketchbook. I interviewed and drew eighty-four of the most interesting people in their workplaces. This experience taught me the value and passion workers bring to service. For TODO magazine, I interviewed and drew cab drivers. For the online magazine Chow.com, I illustrate chefs creating simple food dishes. I am presently at work on a book of drawings about Civil War reenactors.
