Rigid materials resist change under force. Malleable materials welcome this change and can be pressed or hammered into an entirely different shape without breaking or cracking. The materials I select for my work: copper, steel, brass, and silver all share this rigid/malleable dichotomy. They grow more rigid when stressed and yet have the ability to be reset and given new life through annealing. Humans and metal respond similarly to stress. Like humans, the metals can remember the forces placed on them, lose the memory of these forces entirely or fall somewhere in between. I believe the struggle to find middle ground between being rigid and malleable worthwhile both in my life and in my sculpture.
